Eating Disorders do not discriminate. Anyone of an Eating Disorders do not discriminate. Anyone of any size, any gender and any background can struggle.

Eating Disorders are rarely obvious by simply looking at the person. Many people struggle in secret and in silence.

If you are a therapist and you tell yourself you don't need to be educated on the topic because you don't work with eating disorders, then you need to stop and assess your bias. You DO need to be educated on the topic because you never know when a client might disclose such a struggle to you.

Taking a little break. My previous post must have Taking a little break. My previous post must have been a little foreshadowing as I have decided to take a week off from client work to do some CPD training, catch up on admin, drink coffee in the sun, and take care of myself.

I know some counsellors can find it hard to choose to take that time out from client work to focus on training, or admin, or yknow..just rest a little. Often trying to shoehorn the clients in after a day full of training or similar. However, I see it as ultimately vital that we model to our clients that we need this time, CPD is important, taking rest is important, not feeling overwhelmed with admin is important.... and your clients are capable of looking after themselves. They do it without you every week for 167 hours. Thats not to downplay the importance of our role, but to be realistic. I am also my best self when I take care of my needs too.

Self care break time. Lots of people who I commu Self care break time.

Lots of people who I communicate with comment on how busy I seem, and some ask how I cope with that. For me it's really about following my natural flow and taking lots of breaks. I dont work a traditional 9 to 5 but nor am I working away 24/7. In fact I typically work about 5 actual hours a day but that could be spread anytime from dusk to dawn depending what my self care needs are that day. The dog, and the veg patch help aswell.

What are you doing for self care today?

Does your university invite in guest speakers? If they do and you'd like them to include eating disorder education as part of this tell them to get in touch!

Diet culture and all that in encompasses is someth Diet culture and all that in encompasses is something I firmly believe you need to understand and reflect on before you work with those with Eating Disorders.

I hear time and time again from those with eating disorders who've had problematic unaware conversations with professionals who said things like "I promise you won't gain too much weight", or "are you eating 'properly'?', or "just eat more fruit and veg". These types of conversations can be very harmful and indication of internalised diet culture.

We've basically all been sucked into it at some point, but if you're working with those with eating disorders you do need to learn about this issue, how it's relevant to you, and how you want to align yourself as a professional.

You can sign up for my CPD mailing list (link in bio) if you want to stay informed about my training.

For me one of the lovely things about working from home has been having her with me. It's not my main motivation for continuing to work solely online, but it's certainly the cutest reason.

Are you still working online, or have you got back to working in the same way you were pre pandemic?
